CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—Alabama State University (0-12) traveled to Chattanooga looking for their first volleyball win of the season against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (6-6) and came away with a 3-0 loss to the Mocs.
The first set of the game saw the two teams even at two before UTC went on a 7-2 lead to push their lead out to 9-4. The closest ASU would get would be 18-14 in the set, before UTC went on to win the first set 25-16.
The second set saw the two teams even at four before another UTC run of 14-4 would push their lead back out to 18-8 as they would go on to win 25-13.
The two teams were even at six and UTC went on another run, this one a 6-0 run and would go on to lead by as much as 22-10 in the set. ASU would make a mini run of their own, scoring six consecutive points to cut the lead to 22-16, forcing a UTC timeout.
The timeout worked for the Mocs as they were able to gain control of the serve and finish the final points for the 25-16 set three and game victory.
“This game went like a lot of games this year, we are making some good plays, but we lose focus too easily and our opponents are able to take advantage of that,” head coach
Penny Lucas-White said. “We are not going to use our youth as an excuse, we now have 12 games under our belt and it is time we start playing like we have some experience.”
“We play hard and don't give up, but we have to find some leaders and we have to find a way to push ourselves to improve at each practice and carry that improvement on to the court.”
Amber Bennett and
Chelsey Scott recorded seven kills each and
Brooke Beasley had 19 assists.
Luiza Griz led the team with 13 digs.
Briana Reid had a game-high 10 kills to lead UTC while Bridget Camacho had 33 assists and Paula Passmore had 18 digs.
The Lady Hornets will host the ASU Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15. Teams participating in the event are Troy University, University of North Texas, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, University of Tennessee-Martin and fellow SWAC member Jackson State University.
