Volleyball Drops Two on Final Day of Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY—Alabama State University fell to the University of Tennessee at Martin and to the University of North Texas on the final day of the ASU Invitational.
 
Carnae Dillard had 10 kills for North Texas in the tournament's final game as the Mean Green hit .402 for the game.  May Allen had 21 assists and Shelby Tamura had 15 digs.  UNT won the sets by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-14.
 
Anniiya Robinson had a game-high 11 kills to lead ASU.  Brooke Beasley had 24 assists, also a game high and had her third double-double of the season when she added 10 digs.
 
ASU fell to the University of Tennessee at Martin (3-9) in their first game of the day.  In a theme that has become an all-too-often problem, ASU would hang around for a while only to give up a run and lose the game.
 
The Skyhawks were able to pull out a 25-19 win in the first set as ASU was able to keep it close, but UTM scored four straight points late in the set to make a 19-16 score a 23-16 score.
 
Set two saw the two teams even at eight before UTM would go on a run to push the lead out to 16-8.  ASU would come back to make it 16-13, but UTM would go on to win the set 25-14.
 
In set three, ASU and UTM played neck and neck but UTM was able to score the final two points to win the set and match 25-22.
 
Jackie Harter had 12 kills and Emily Keaton added 10 for UTM.  Amanda Crask had 35 assists and Kasey Elswick had 17 digs.
 
Rachel Smith led ASU with 10 kills and Brooke Beasley had 28 assists.  Luiza Griz had 18 digs.
 
“Again, with this young team I see so many good things, but we just can't seem to keep it going before falling back into old habits,” Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said.  “I want this team to strive to get better and they do work hard at it, but we have to quit giving points to our opponents with bad play.”
 
“We have played a tough non-conference schedule for a reason.  I wanted this young team to play some of the top teams we could find knowing there would be some tough times.  Next week we start our conference play and we will see how we react to conference play.”
 
Maryland-Eastern Shore and Troy started the action off on the second day of the Invite.  It was a battle of the two teams that went undefeated on the opening day of play.
 
UMES won the battle 3-2 by scores of 25-12, 20-25, 26-28, 25-18, 15-9.  Victoria Williams led UMES with 18 kills and six blocks.  Teammates Ndidi Ibbe had 14 kills and Bridget Ebster-Schwarzenberger added 12.  Jessie Vcic had a tournament-high 53 assists.
 
Breanna Cullity led Troy (8-6) with eight kills and 12 total blocks, which is a tournament-high.  Devin Von Pingle had a team-high nine kills and Alexandra Alexander had 33 assists.
 
The second game of the day saw North Texas defeat Jackson State 3-0 (25-15, 29-27, 25-11).  Carnae Dillard led UNT with 15 kills and Camille Cherry had 14 assists.  Shelby Tamura also added 14 digs.
 
Christine Edwards led JSU with 14 kills while Jenna Siddiqui had 30 assists.  Angelica Kelly had 14 digs.
 
JSU (2-11) lost to UMES (14-1) 3-0 in the fifth game of the day.  With the win UMES was the only team in the Invite to win all of their games.  UMES won the game 25-17, 25-18, 25-20.
 
Laveinga Lea'Aetoa led a balanced Hawks attack with 12 kills.  Victoria Williams had 10.  Jessie Vicic finished with 38 assists and Maline Vaitai had 10 digs.

JSU's Christine Edwards had a game-high 14 kills.  Teammate Jenna Siddiqui had 23 assists and Angelica Kelly had nine digs.
 
ASU (0-16) will be off until Saturday, Sept.  22 when jump into Southwestern Athletic Conference action with a home game against Alcorn State.  The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
