Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision at AAMU

Box Score HUNTSVILLE—Chelsey Scott had a career-high 18 kills and Khryssnee Madison also had a career-high 16 kills, but it wasn't enough as Alabama A&M University (3-15/2-0 SWAC) defeated Alabama State 3-1 in a barn burner volleyball match.

All four sets were close as AAMU won sets one and two 25-22 and 25-23.  The Lady Hornets took set three 25-23, but AAMU would come back to win set four and the game 25-17.

The Lady Bulldogs had three players reach double digits in kills led by 6'-2” Bianca Richardson with 14.  Mariah Brown and Kyanna Sales both had 11 each.

AAMU finished the game hitting .344 and Ashley Forman had a game-high 51 assists.  Rebecca Cortez had 13 assists.

ASU hit .274 with Brooke Beasley having a career-high 45 assists.  Luiza Griz led the defense with 13 digs.  ASU had nine total blocks compared to only 3 for AAMU and Beasley led the way with 2.5.

The first set saw Bianca Richardson use her 6'-2” frame by collecting four kills in leading the home standing Lady Bulldogs to a close 25-22 win.  AAMU led by as much as seven at 20-13 only to see ASU come roaring back to cut it to 20-19, but a serve error by ASU gave AAMU the serve back and a two point lead.

Set two was another close set, but again Richardson was the difference as she was able to score the final two points for AAMU giving the Lady Bulldogs a tough 25-23 win.  Both teams hit the ball well as ASU hit .500 for the set and AAMU hit .436.

Madison again led ASU with four kills and Myla Marshall had three in the tough second set.

Set three was just like the first two, but this time the Lady Hornets were able to jump out and lead by as much as 14-8.  AAMU would come back to eventually even the score at 19 and 21, but ASU would put the game away on a kill from Scott, her 12th of the night to send the game to a fourth set.

Set four saw the two teams battle back and forth to nine before ASU would score the next three points to lead 12-9, but that is where the Lady Bulldogs would go on a 7-0 run to lead 16-12 and they would never trail again.  AAMU would go on to win the game by a final score of 25-17.

“I could not have been more proud of how the girls fought tonight,” Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said.  “Of course I am not thrilled with the loss, but the way fought with one of the best teams in the conference tooth and nail, I can't be anything but happy with the way the competed.”

“We really had a chance to send this to a fifth set, but we made way too many errors in the fourth set.  We had a two-point lead and then made four straight hitting errors and allowed them to not only take the lead, but get on a roll and we could not stop it.”

ASU would close it to 23-22 but AAMU closed it out with the final two points.  Khryssnee Madison started the game off with six kills for ASU as they hit .231 in the first.

ASU (1-17/1-1 SWAC) will be back in action Tuesday, Oct. 2 when they host a non-conference game against Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. in Lockhart Gymnasium.
