Volleyball Drops Two on Second Day of Bama Bash

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 TUSCALOOSA—Alabama State (0-11) lost their final two games of the Bama Bash losing to Alabama in the opening game of the day and dropping their final game of the Bash to Austin Peay State University (5-9) 3-0.
 
Against Alabama (9-1) the Lady Hornets played well against the taller Crimson Tide, but the host' were able to pull out a 25-11, 25-16 and 25-18 win.
 
The first set saw the teams tied at five before Alabama went on a 7-1 run to push the lead out to 12-5 and went on to end the set on a 20-6 run to finish off the Lady Hornets.

Set two was a lot like the first set as both teams battled back and forth and with Bama holding a 16-12 lead, was able to put together a 6-0 run that pushed the lead out to 22-12.  It was a lead ASU could not battle through in the 25-16 loss.
 
The third set saw ASU lead by three points on several occasions, the last at 12-9 before the Tide put together another solid 6-0 run which put them up 15-12. 
 
After an ASU timeout the Lady Hornets scored two quick points to cut it to 15-14, but that would be as close as they would get as Bama went on to outscore ASU 10-4 down the stretch for the 25-18 final.
 
Rachel Smith led ASU with seven kills and Brooke Beasley had 19 assists.  Luiza Griz had 11 digs.  The Lady Hornets had seven team blocks compared to 4 for Alabama and Myla Marshall led the way with four assists (2.0 blocks).
 
The taller Crimson Tide got a game-high 18 kills from Pricilla Duke-Ezeji and 10 from Andrea McQuaid.  Sierra Wilson had 40 assists and Cristina Arenas chipped in with 15 assists.
 
The second game was all Austin Peay as they won by scores of 25-8, 25-18 and 25-15.  APSU took advantage of three consecutive hitting errors in the first set to start them on their way.
 
The second game saw the two teams trading points and was actually even at seven and with APSU holding a 10-9 lead, the Governors scored a 5-0 run to push the lead out to 15-9.  ASU did cut the lead to 16-15, but could never catch APSU as they outscored ASU 9-3 to finish out the 25-18 win.
 
Set three was all APSU as their largest lead of the set was 20-8.  ASU made it a little better with a 6-0 run to cut it to 20-14, but APSU was able to score five of the next six points to end the game.
 
Amber Bennett led ASU with eight kills and Brooke Beasley had 24 assists.  Anniiya Robinson led ASU with eight digs.
 
Nikki Doyle had a game-high nine kills to lead APSU.  Cami Fields had 28 assists and Jada Stotts had nine digs.
 
“This was a day that saw the girls really do a lot of good things against a very talented Southeastern Conference team in Alabama,” Head Coach Penny Lucas-White said.  “They ran the plays we ask, they were aggressive and you could see their confidence and the fact they are getting better.”
 
“The second game against a very good Austin Peay team just looked like we could not get out of our own way.  We gave away 39 points on errors and Austin Peay did not need any help.  This is one of those games we just need to get it out of our heads as quickly as possible and move on.”
 
ASU will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when they travel to Chattanooga to face Tennesse-Chattanooga at 6 p.m. (CT).
