MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State women's soccer team recently had a chance to sit down with Robert O. White, a professor in the Humanities department at Alabama State University, to discuss Building Unity Amongst Diversity.
"Having this conversation was something that our team was very passionate about having," head coach
Jodie Smith said. "For us to be able to trust each other, understand, and learn from our teammates' experiences, it brings our differences into focus.
"Dr. White was able to lead and moderate the conversation for us. He was able to help us open up and talk about things, to make us think and to help us understand."
The talk was focused on "Finding common ground amidst complex social crises."
The term "university" comes from the Latin phrase E Pluribus Unum, which has been interpreted as "out of many comes one." Dr. White discussed the origins of the HBCU, the legacy of the HBCU, and some helpful techniques to build clear lines of dialogue in addressing the role HBCU students of all races and backgrounds can play in accomplishing the objective of a more perfect union.
