BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State set several new PRs on the opening day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Although not on the scoreboard after the first day of competition, the Alabama State men sent several student-athletes through the preliminary rounds and into positions to score on Sunday led by
Jamarion Stubbs with a new facility record of 6.67 seconds in the 60-meters. He was joined by
Justus Trainer as a qualifier for the next round with the sixth-fastest time of 6.91.

Meanwhile,
Vaughn DeVaughn III advanced in the 60-meter hurdles with the top time of 8.11 seconds while Stubbs went through with the top time in the 200-meters at 21.15 seconds. The Hornets qualified a pair in the 400-meters including
Joshua Knox with the third-fastest time at 48.50 and DeVaughn III with a new PR in at 48.89 seconds. They also qualified a pair in the 800-meters with the top two times by
Khabeeba Mills (1:56.65) and
Amos Beadle (1:56.69).

Jon Coulter also qualified in the 1-Mile run with a time of 4:39.98.

On the women's side, Alabama State sits second with 28 points just one point behind Alabama A&M after the opening day of competition.
Shamia Jones reached the medal stand with a second-place finish in the 3000-meters with a time of 10:53.29, while
Rebecca Bernadin (10:59.22) and
Taisha Benjamin (11:09.68) each scored points for the Lady Hornets.

Meanwhile,
Shakayla Riggins finished third in the Pentathlon and the Distance Medley Relay team finished second with a time of 12:42.96.

Despite a pair of PRs in the 60-meter prelims,
Rasunek Tyler-Thompson was the lone qualifier with a time of 7.64 seconds before she qualified in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55 seconds.
Jaqual Bush (23.97) and
Quincy Penn (24.25) each qualified for the next round in the 200-meters, while Penn (55.52) also qualified in the 400-meters with a new PR.

Jones qualified in the 800-meters with a time of 2:15.53, while
Taliah Wickett qualified at 2:15.97.
