ITTA BENA, Miss. -- The Alabama State University Lady Hornets volleyball team went 1-2 in the 2009 Mississippi Valley State Jesse Harris Tournament held Friday-Saturday at the RW Harrison Complex and then lost a conference divisional match Sunday to MVSU.
In its first match of the tournament, ASU (3-12) was defeated by Southern University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-15).
The Lady Hornets were led by junior
Kelsye Hall, who had five kills and one service ace. Juniors
Althea Russell and
Sierra Caudle each recorded four kills, while Senior
Anna Meinert led the way defensively with seven digs. Meinert also had 10 assists, one service ace and four blocks.
The Jaguars were led by Banaka Okwuone with eight kills and seven blocks, while Sharlene Ruffin picked up 24 digs to lead the team defensively.
ASU was routed by host team Mississippi Valley, 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-22, 25-17). Caudle put down 10 kills with four digs and four blocks to lead the Lady Hornets. Senior
Jessica Holt contributed seven kills, four digs and four blocks, while
Roselande Corneille led the team defensively with 16 digs.
Valley had two players record double-digit kills as Kantessa Bryant had 11 and Maura Moed had 10. Devilettes Lonnie Hoff and Shonese Evans contributed nine kills each.
In its final game of the tournament, ASU beat Alcorn State University, 3-0 (25-5, 25-10, 25-20) on Saturday. Holt continued her dominance as she led the way with eight kills, two service aces and two solo blocks. Caudle contributed seven kills while
Nina Saunders and Russell each added five kills. Corneille picked up 11 digs in the victory.
The Lady Braves had three players -- Kesha Roberson, Erica Pratcher and Ashley Kerl -- who each tallied two kills.
ASU dropped its second divisional game, 3-1, (26-24, 19-25, 20-25, 13-25) against Mississippi Valley State on Sunday. Holt recorded 12 kills, four digs and one block-assist. Caudle embraced 10 kills, seven digs and two blocks. Teammates Russell added nine kills and Hall aided with seven kills, one service ace and one block-assist.
Alabama State will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 30, when the Lady Hornets host Alcorn State. They also will match up with Savannah State Friday, Oct. 2. Both games are set for 6 p.m. in Lockhart Gymnasium on the campus of Alabama State University.
